One Christ and Two Births

Blog 13

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting (Micah 5:2).

Who was Born of Mary?

The one Christ, the incarnate God, had two births. He was born from the Father in eternity before all ages and He was born from the virgin Mary, at the fullness of the time.

Nestorius said “If any one says that the man who was formed of the Virgin is the Only-begotten, who was born from the bosom of the Father, and does not rather confess that he has obtained the designation of Only-begotten on account of his connection with him who in nature is the Only-begotten of the Father; and besides, if any one calls another than the Emmanuel Christ let him be anathema.” [1]

St. Cyril of Jerusalem said, "God has one only Son, one naturally begotten, who did not begin to be when he was born in Bethlehem but is before all ages … do not fix your attention on him as coming from Bethlehem simply but worship him as begotten eternally of the Father." https://catenabible.com/bible/mi/5/2
